Embraer Aircraft: Defence Minister seeks to CBI

The defence minister has asked CBI to investigate about the deal that has been signed in 2008 between Embraer and the DRDO during the previous UPA rule.

Embraer is the world’s third-largest aircraft maker, who hired an Indian middleman based in the UK to get the deal. The deal involved the purchase of three aircraft equipped with indigenous radars for Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems.

United States Justice Department has started his investigation since 2010 when a contract with the Dominican Republic raised the suspicions.

It has said that Embraer has given bribes to secure their contracts and after that US Justice Department has started the investigation when defence minister hinted CBI about it. The government has also asked the CBI to investigate the deal which is signed with Brazillian aircraft maker.

“If there is a criminal angle, then we can give it (probe) to CBI. The defence ministry cannot investigate criminal angle,” Parrikar had said when asked whether the probe would be handed over to the CBI.

The Embraer Aircraft Deal was signed when Congress was leading the government.
