New Delhi, June 15: Celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr began on Friday across the nation.

States like Kerala and Gujarat started the celebrations after offering prayers and wishing each other.

In Kerala, Eid is being celebrated today as the moon was sighted in Kozhikode. People offered prayers at Thiruvananthapuram’s Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr today where Congress MP Shashi Tharoor were also present.

The festival will be celebrated on Saturday in most parts of the country as the moon was not sighted here on Thursday.

Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari made the announcement tonight after a meeting of the moon-sighting committee here, a senior official at the city’s historic mosque said on Thursday.

“The moon was not sighted today. So, that means the Eid will be celebrated on Saturday in Delhi and several other parts of the country,” he told PTI.

The festival of Eid, celebrated by Muslims across the world, marks the end of Ramzan, the holy month of fasting in the Islamic calendar when the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Eid marks the first day of the month of Shawwal.

Eid-al-Fitr, which means ‘festival of breaking of the fast’, is celebrated when the new moon is sighted. Due to this, the festival is sometimes celebrated on different days in different parts of the world and the date varies from year to year.

A major Indian festival, Eid is observed as a public holiday. It is celebrated with great fervour across the country and especially at major mosques like Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, Jama Masjid in New Delhi, Dargah Sharif in Ajmer, Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar and Taj Mahal Mosque in Agra.

Sweets and traditional desserts are also distributed and served among friends, family and to the needy as a gesture of sharing and partaking happiness and good luck. There is great emphasis on charity on this day. It is obligatory to donate to the poor and needy before offering prayers. The celebrations often go on for three days.
