Earthquake measuring 5.2 on Richter scale jolts Manipur


A medium intensity earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the poll-bound Manipur on February 24. According to the initial reports, no loss of life or damage to property has been reported so far.

The earthquake struck a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state. PM Modi will be visiting the state on February 25 to address a rally.

The northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur are considered to be situated in the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.

An earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale in the region in 1897 left over 1,600 people dead.
