Earl claimed 38 lives, another storm signals red in Mexico

Mexico City, Aug 8: The tropical storm Earl has played havoc in Mexico over the weekend which claimed atleast 38 lives till now, authorities said.

Earlier till Sunday afternoon, the authorities reported at least 28 deaths in the state of Puebla, including 15 children. Meanwhile, Veracruz state reported 10 deaths by Sunday evening, Xinhua news agency reported.storm-wefornewsThe state’s civil protection bureau informed that they have recovered all the bodies.

The state has already evacuated dozens of people who were living along major rivers in case of more rains but Earl is expected to begin to dissipate over Mexico’s central mountains.

Before entering Mexico, Earl hit Honduras and Belize, capsizing boats and destroying homes.

However, The situation might be more critical as the next tropical storm of the season, named Javier, was forming on Sunday off the country’s Pacific Coast.

Indonesia volcano erupts, forces evacuation

Jakarta, May 11: Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted on Friday spewing 5,500-metre high column of volcanic ash, forcing residents to evacuate.

The volcano situated in the borders of Klaten, Magelang and Boyolali districts erupted at 7.30 a.m., Xinhua news agency quoted national disaster management agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho as saying.

Volcanic ash rain has occurred in Tugu Kaliurang and is forecast to persist in the south of the crater, he said.

To prevent the risks especially, the local officials have distributed masks, Sutopo added.

“Local disaster agency has instructed the villagers living in the radius 5 km from the crater to evacuate immediately,” he told Xinhua.

A 3 km no-go zone has been declared by the volcanology agency.

Mount Merapi is an active stratovolcano and has regularly erupted since 1948.

It is located about 28 km north of Yogyakarta city which has a population of 2.4 million and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano.

Pyrolastic flow from a large explosion killed 27 people on November 1994, and another large eruption occurred in 2006. Mount Merapi is one of Indonesias 129 active volcanoes.

Earthquake tremors felt in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, May 9: A ‘moderate’ earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday sending people running out of buildings in panic.

“A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred in Jammu and Kashmir at 4.11 p.m.,” Sonam Lotus, director of the local Met department told IANS.

“The epicentre of the tremor was in Afghanistan-Tajakistan region. Its latitude was 36.9 degrees north while its longitude was 71.3 degrees east. Its depth was 96 km,” he added.

Tremors were felt in both the Valley and the Jammu region. At several places, people rushed out of homes, offices and other workplaces in panic.

However, no reports of any casualty or damage to property have been received so far.
