On Novemver 8 Prime Minister Narendra Modi stunned the nation by stashing 86 % of country’s currency in circulation and announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and RS 1000 notes to curb black money and corruption. The decision to demonetisation has been severely criticized due to bad implementation and unavailability of cash with banks. Basing its report on documents accessed from Bihar’s revenue department, catch says that BJP’s earlier version of these land deals is bogus.

On 25 November, just after the news about BJP’s massive land buying in Bihar before demonetisation sprang up, BJP had claimed that all transactions were paid through checks or RTGs and not cash. The Bihar BJP had said they have nothing to bother about.

BJP’s senior party leader Sushil Modi had said loans supported these purchases. “BJP provides every details of its spending to the Income Tax; any purchase of land is through cheque/RTGS not cash,” he had said.

Reportedly Bihar MLA and general secretary Sanjeev Chaurasia; vice president, Bihar BJP Lal Babu Prasad; and treasurer, Bihar BJP Dilip Jaiswal have bought these properties.

In earlier reports, Catch had reported that as much as 10 properties were bought by BJP in Bihar between September- October this year and some of these properties were bought by the BJP president Amit Shah.

After the news broke, Sanjeev Chaurasia had claimed that the BJP Bihar had bought land parcels not only in Bihar but at other places in the country and that too in the first week of November.

Contradicting Sushil Modi, Chaurasia however had not denied cash buying of properties. He haid said, “Alag alag tareeke se paisa aata hai”

about it being very secretive to the point where nobody except for the PM and a handful of individuals knew about it. “Not even the Finance Minister knew about this policy,” Sushil Modi had claimed.

Chaurasia, member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Digha, who had also purchased land on behalf of his party, had confirmed that the party had bought land in the state till as late as the first week of November.

Opposition parties have demanded independent probe of the suspicious land deals just before the demonetisation. In the ongoing Winter session of Parliament the opposition parties have united and a deadlock is reached over demonetisation. While Prime Minister is yet to represent the House.
