Don’t be flippant about Indian symbols: Shaktikanta Das warns Amazon


New Delhi, Jan 16, 2017: Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das on Sunday asked e-commerce giant Amazon to abstain from being flippant about Indian symbols and icons and warned if it shows indifference towards Indian sensibilities, it will do so at its own peril.

Economic Affairs Secretary’s remark come days after External Affairs Ministry head Sushma Swaraj received a complaint about doormats illustrating the tricolour flag, which were listed on Amazon’s Canada website.

After she threatened that if the offending product is not removed from website, she would not grant visas to Amazon officials and “rescind the visas issued earlier.”

The e-commerce website then removed the article from the online marketplace.

However, two days after Amazon’s Canada portal removed the article with doormats, the online company, on its US portal, put up another article of slippers with Mahatma Gandhi’s image on it.

This incident provoked the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to say that the company should respect Indian sensitivities and sentiments.
