DMK urged govt to hoist ban on Jallikattu

Jan 4: Urging Centre to hoist the ban on bull-controlling sport Jallikattu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Wednesday passed a resolution.

The resolution was passed in the DMK’s general council meeting in Chennai.

Earlier in May 2014, the Supreme Court banned the practice of Jallikattu, citing animal welfare issues.

Later on January 8, 2016: Government of India passed an order which exempted Jallikattu from all the performances where bulls cannot be used.

However, Supreme Court on 15th January in 2016 sustained its ban on the same which lead to protests all over Tamil Nadu.

16 resolutions including that against demonetisation were passed in the general council meeting. The DMK urged the Centre to mitigate the hardships faced by people post the decision on 8 November last year.
