Chennai, Aug 7: DMK President M. Karunanidhi passed away on Tuesday at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai.
“Dr.M Karunanidhi passed away at 6.10 pm. Despite best efforts of our doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond”, Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital said in a statement.
“We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide”.
The 94-year-old DMK veteran leader was admitted to the hospital on July 28 and his condition deteriorated on Monday.
Karunanidhi was first admitted to the same hospital on July 18 for replacement of the tracheostomy tube.
The five-time former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was suffering from urinary tract infection and age-related ailments and earlier he was under observation at his home.
He is survived by his two wives Dayalu and Rajathi, sons M.K. Muthu, Alagiri, Stalin and M.K. Tamilarasu and daughters S. Selvi and Kanimozhi and grandchildren.
Muthuvel Karunanidhi,who strode the public life of Tamil Nadu like a colossus, played an intergal role in the Indian politics.
