Digvijaya blames Cong leaders for Goa fiasco

Our alliance with Babush went through and we won 3 out of 5 but our alliance with Goa Forward was sabotaged by our own leaders. Sad!

Panaji, Mar 17 : Facing flak for his handling of the Goa polls, AICC General Secretary Digvijaya Singh today said his proposal for a pre-poll alliance with Goa Forward was “sabotaged” by his own party leaders.

He said had the alliance with Goa Forward gone through, the Congress would have got majority in the state and that it was unfair to now make him a “villain”.

“As a strategy I had proposed a secular alliance with regional party headed by Babush Monserratte and Goa Forward headed by Vijai Sardesai,” Singh said in a series of tweets.

“Our alliance with Babush went through and we won 3 out of 5 but our alliance with Goa Forward was sabotaged by our own leaders. Sad!” he said.

The Congress had supported Atanasio (Babush) Monserratte’s United Goan party in Panaji constituency and given tickets to four of his supporters.

“Goa Forward won 3 out of 4 (seats) they contested. Had our alliance with Goa Forward gone through we would have been 22,” he said in another tweet.

“Still Digvijaya guilty? I leave it to you to judge,” the senior Congress leader said.

He said that while the Congress is being blamed for deciding late on its legislative party leader in Goa, the BJP is yet to decide its leader in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

“Congress was blamed for being late in deciding its Leader. BJP yet to decide leader in UP and Uttarakhand.

Results came on 11th evening,” Digvijaya said.

He said the Congress Legislative Party leader for Punjab was decided on March 13 and for Manipur and Goa on March 12.

“In Manipur there was a sitting Chief Minister in Goa 4 Ex CM got elected as MLAs but we chose the leader on 12th,” Singh said defending himself.

“Letter to Governor goes after the leader is chosen, which we did but the Governor took the decision before that,” he said.

Singh said that when took over as incharge of the party in Goa, the organisation was in a “disarray.”

“When I and Chella Kumar (AICC Secretary) took charge of Goa in 2013 out of 9 Congress MLAs only six were active (and) the whole organisation was in a disarray,” he said.

“Even Congress Leaders were predicting 2-4 seats (in Goa polls) for Congress,” he said in another tweet.

Singh said it was unfair to make him a “villain” in the present situation.

Without taking any name, he said, “A senior Hindi TV Journalist who has a flat in Goa and who was very active for Congress in 2012 election predicted a clean sweep for AAP.”

“And that too as late as January 2017. AAP reduced to zero, BJP came down from 22 to 13 and yet Digvijaya is a villain! Unfair!” he said. .

Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday alleged that she has been “illegally detained yet again” and denied permission to visit a party leader in Pulwama district.

She also alleged that her daughter Iltija has been placed under house arrest.

“I’ve been illegally detained yet again. Since 2 days, J&K administration has refused to allow me to visit party leader
Waheed Ur Rehman’s family in Pulwama. He was arrested on baseless charges. Even my daughter placed under house arrest (sic),” Mufti said in a tweet.

“Their cruelty knows no bounds. Waheed was arrested on baseless charges & I am not allowed to even console his family. Even my daughter Iltija has been placed under house arrest because she also wanted to visit Waheed’s family (sic),” she added.

The former chief minister will hold a press conference at 3 pm today on various issues. Mehbooba was released on October 14 after being in detention from August 5 last year following the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had on Wednesday arrested, Waheed Parra, the youth wing president of PDP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit, in connection with a terror case.

Parra, who recently filed his nomination for the District Development Council (DDC) elections from Pulwama in South Kashmir, was being questioned at the NIA headquarters here since Monday for his alleged involvement with the Hizbul Mujahideen terror group.

“Today NIA arrested Waheed Ur Rehman Parra, the youth wing leader of People’s Democratic Party, in connection with the Naveed Babu-Davinder Singh case for supporting Hizbul Mujahideen in conspiracy with the other accused persons,” NIA’s spokesperson had said.

Wrong to prevent farmers from holding peaceful demonstrations: Kejriwal

Thousands of farmers have been marching to Delhi from Punjab and Haryana protesting against the laws that liberalise the agriculture sector

Farmers Protest

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday showed his support to the farmers who are protesting against the three farm laws passed in the Parliament in September, and said that they should be allowed to stage a peaceful protest.

“The three farm bills of the central government are anti-farmer. Instead of rolling back these bills, farmers are being stopped from staging peaceful protests. Water cannons are being used against them. This is injustice to the farmers. Peaceful protest is their constitutional right,” said Kejriwal in a tweet on Thursday.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had voted against the Bills in both Lok Sabha (where it has one MP) and Rajya Sabha (where it has three MPs).

Thousands of farmers have been marching to Delhi from Punjab and Haryana protesting against the laws that liberalise the agriculture sector. While some groups were stopped in Haryana on Wednesday and water cannons used against them, several others continue to approach Delhi to stage a protest. The Delhi Police has issued a notice prohibiting any gathering in the Capital, citing Covid-19 regulations and the Delhi Metro has temporarily closed operation on certain routes.

The three laws that have led to widespread protests are the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.
