New Delhi, Oct 17: Festival of lights is around the corner, which begins with Dhanteras with people buying gold, silver, automobile, utensils and other precious items related to day to day life.
“Dhanteras” is a combination of two words i.e. Dhan which means wealth, and Teras which means 13th day. As per the Hindu calendar, Dhanteras falls on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Ashwin.
The first day of hindu festival is also known as Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi.
According to Indian tradition, it is believed that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi came out from the ocean of milk during the churning of the Sea. Besides this people also worship the god of wealth Kuber.
As per the Drikpanchang, the Shubh Muhurat for Dhanteras puja lies between 19:32 pm to 20:18 pm. This year puja timings falls during Pradhosh kaal will span for 2 hours and 24 minutes.
Dhanteras also marks the birth anniversary of Dhanwantri – the physician of Gods and the master teacher of all physicians.
