Devotees throng Ahmedabad as annual Jagannath Rath Yatra begins

New Delhi, July 14: Devotees from all across the country thronged in Ahmedabad, for the nine-day annual festival of Jagannath Rath Yatra, on Saturday.

During the yatra, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra took to three giant wooden chariots pulled by devotees.

Rath Yatra (chariot festival) is the celebration marking the annual journey of the three deities from the 12th century. The Yatra marks the return on Lord Krishna to his place Vrindavan along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.

Tight security arrangements have been put in place to ensure smooth conduct of Rath Yatra.

On this auspicious occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and extended his greetings. “With the blessings of Lord Jagannath, may our country scale new heights of growth. May every Indian be happy and prosperous,” the PM tweeted.

Meanwhile, BJP president Amit Shah who is in Gujarat participated in the ‘mangla aarti’ at the Lord Jagannath Temple, before the commencement of the 141st Rath Yatra.

Later, he is scheduled to address a youth parliament in a university in Gandhinagar.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also took part in Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra in Odisha.
