Deepika to start film on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal early next year

Mumbai, Dec 14: Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who will next be seen on-screen playing the role of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal in Meghna Gulzar’s yet untitled film, says they will start working on the film early next year.

Deepika was interacting with the media at Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 2018 here on Thursday.

Laxmi Agarwal was attacked by a man in 2005 at the age of 15 after she rejected his marriage proposal and she had to undergo several surgeries. Later, she took up the job of helping acid attack survivors and promoted campaigns to stop acid attacks.

She even received the US State Department’s International Women of Courage Award in 2014 from the former First Lady of United States, Michelle Obama.

Deepika will also turn producer with the film.

“We will start working on the film early next year. I think it’s a story that needs to be told. It’s a very important story and it’s a true life incident, so hopefully good things will come out of it”, Deepika stated.

Director Meghna Gulzar feels Laxmi’s story needs to be told to bring awareness in the society. Earlier, talking to a leading daily, Gulzar said, “Using Laxmi’s story as a lens, we are attempting to explore these aspects and the consequences of acid-related violence in our society. This’s what makes this must-told story relevant. Awareness is the first step towards change,”.

About casting Deepika as Laxmi in her film, Meghna added, “I was instinctively convinced that Deepika would do justice to the character and the story. Also, her physicality matched with what I’d imagined for Laxmi’s character. I’m grateful and encouraged that she was so spontaneous in her decision to do the film.”
