Death toll reaches to 23 in Mumbai stampede

Mumbai, Sep 30: The death toll in the stampede on a foot overbridge (FOB) linking two railways stations reached to 23 after a 35-year-old critical victim succumbed to injuries at the KEM Hospital here on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as a 23 year-old Satyendra Kanojia.

Yesterday, around 10 a.m., in an unprecedented stampede on the Mumbai suburban train network, 22 commuters, including eight women,lost thier lives and over 40 got injured at Elphinstone Road station.

The tragedy took place on a foot overbridge connecting the station with Parel on the Central Railway, due to overcrowding after a sudden downpour and at least four trains arriving simultaneously at both stations, resulting to a heavy rush.

In a latest development, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal today ordered setting up of multi-disciplinary teams to visit and inspect all suburban stations within a week.

After the deadly stampede ruling government received strong reactions over the failure of security at railway stations.
