Dalit Beaten

Three Dalit youths were stripped and assaulted by a group on Friday night after they were allegedly caught stealing stationery from a Union Bank customer care service centre in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. A purported video of the assault has gone viral where several people are seen assaulting the three youths sitting on a street.

Jaunpur Superintendent of Police Vipin Kumar Mishra said that the an FIR has been registered against the three youths who were taken into custody.

Meanwhile, the people who thrashed the men have also been booked and an investigation is underway, Mishra added.

Mishra said that on the intervening night of July 5 and 6, the three youths were trying to break the lock of the customer care centre of the Union Bank branch, under the Sarai Khwaja police station.

When the watchman woke up and raised an alarm, the three youths tried to flee but one of them was caught by the villagers and they later found the others. The three were then stripped and assaulted by a mob,, Mishra said.

The police are probing both cases — the theft attempt and the beating by the mob, Mr. Mishra said, adding that those involved in the thrashing of the youth were being identified.
