New Delhi, Oct 20: Dalbir Singh, who played the role of Ravan in Amritsar Ramleela, also succumbed to the deadly disaster that occurred on Friday evening during the Dussehra celebrations in the city.

Besides Dalbir, the incident had left over 60 people dead and at least 70 others injured when a speeding train ran over the crowd gathered to watch the burning of a Ravana effigy in Amritsar.

Yesterday, after the burning of the effigy of Ravan at the Joda Phatak, Dalbir Singh stood towards one side.

Dalbir is survived by his wife, an eight-month-old child and his old mother.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Dalbir’s mother made an appeal to the government to provide job to her daughter-in-law so that her family could be supported.

On Friday, a 700 strong crowd was watching a huge Ravana effigy go up in flames amid exploding crackers when on the Joda Phatak tracks near Dhobi Ghat the Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU passenger train heading to Hoshiarpur from Amritsar came hurtling down around 7 p.m.

In just 10-15 seconds it left behind a heap of crushed and dismembered bodies.

Doctors at the Civil Hospital said that the death toll could rise as some of the injured were critical. Many killed were migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The Punjab government has declared state mourning on Saturday and all offices and educational institutions would remain closed as a mark of respect to those dying in the train tragedy.

Due to the tragic incident,10 Mail Express trains and 27 passenger trains have been cancelled, while 16 trains were diverted. 10 Mail Express trains and 2 passenger trains were short terminated and 6 Mail Express trains were short originated.
