Gulzar, one of the most celebrated and respected lyricist-directors in the film industry, turned 82 Thursday.

Gulzar, whose real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra, started his career as a lyricist with the hit song ‘Mera gora ang lai le’ in Bandini and went on to pen dozens of chart-busters including ‘Tere bina zindagi se’, ‘Aanewala pal jaane wala hai’, ‘Mera kuchh saamaan’ and ‘Tujhse naraaz nahin zindagi’ as well as peppy numbers like Kajra re, Beedi and Darling.

He was awarded with PadmaBhushan award in Indian Cinemas and also Filmfare awards, one Grammy Award. Gulzar also bagged the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He was appointed as the Chancellor of the Assam University.

He worked in more than 100 movies, As a lyricist, Dialogue Writer. After writing dialogues he took the job of the screenplay for films Aashirwad, Anand, Khamoshi, and he entered into the direction filed with his debut Mere Apne in the year 1971.

Gulzar was married to actress Raakhee, but later they separated. They have a daughter Meghna, who directed films like Filhaal and Just Married.
