27 Congress MLAs stay put inside Punjab assembly after ‘sleep-in’ protest

Congress MLAs spent their Monday night inside the Punjab Assembly. The 27 MLAs slept on the seats of the house and even on the floor.

The Congress MLAs declined to go out from the assembly on Monday evening even after the house got adjourned. This happened as their demand to have a fresh debate on the no-confidence motion against the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance.

“They keep switching off our lights and air-conditioners. We have no food and water for long hours. But we are fighting for Punjab and will not let the government browbeat us,” leader of opposition Charanjit Singh Channi said.

Most of the senior MLAs left on Monday after the session except Suni Jakhar. The young brigade of the Congress party planned the sit-in. Though, there are still differences over continuation of the protest but some of the senior members joined the protest in the morning. There are 42 members of Congress in the assembly.

The party office in the assembly premises arranged the food for the members and Punjab Congress supremo Amarinder Singh also sent the MLAs something to eat in night.. Amarinder met the MLAs who were protesting.

After the session ended, the ACs were turned off as the Chandigarh staff which maintained the same left the premises, said Shashi Mishra. She herself left at 1.15 am but some other staff stayed on, except women members.
