Congress lawmakers in Bengal

Kolkata, May 24 : In a seemingly unprecedented move, all newly-elected Congress legislators in West Bengal have given a “written declaration” on stamp paper that they would not leave the party, a party leader said on Tuesday.

The Congress emerged as the main opposition party in the recent Assembly elections bagging 44 seats in the 294-member house.

The members gave the declaration on non-judicial stamp papers valued at Rs.100.

In the “affidavit to the Congress president”, all the lawmakers swore their “unqualified allegiance” to the party led by its president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi.

They gave an undertaking that they would abide by all the decisions taken by the party, and obey the directives of the chief whip in the assembly.

They also resolved not to make any anti-party remarks and affirmed they would resign their membership of the assembly before opposing any decisions taken by the party.

“All the 44 elected members of the party have taken a unanimous decision that they would not leave the party under any circumstances and indulge in anti-party activities. We have given a written declaration on stamp papers,” senior West Bengal Pradesh Congress leader Abdul Mannan told IANS.

“No one was forced or directed to give the declaration,” said Mannan who was elected from Champdani constituency in Hooghly.

“We have seen in the past that many Congress workers left the party after being elected legislator. The declaration is aimed at preventing such desertions. We will go by the party’s decision,” he said.

A number of legislators who had won on Congress tickets in the previous assembly, later crossed over to the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Rahul Gandhi Video Conf

New Delhi, May 27 : After creating a political stir by saying his party is not the key player in Maharashtra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has claimed that his statement was “distorted”.

In a late Tuesday night tweet along with the video, the former Congress president said “paid media distorts the truth to distract attention from real issues”.

“I would like to make a differentiation here. We are supporting the government in Maharashtra, but, we are not the key decision maker in Maharashtra. We are the key decision maker in Punjab we are the key decision maker in Chhattisgarh, in Rajasthan, in Puducherry. So, there is a difference between running a Government and supporting Government,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, he said that the Congress is only supporting the Maharashtra government and is not a key decision maker.

He, however, defended the Maharashtra government and said the state is one of the most connected in the country.

“It is going to be one of the most aggressive places where corona is going to act. However, Maharashtra is struggling because of the nature of its connectivity and Maharashtra is one of the most important assets frankly that India has. It is the centre of business.

“So, it requires full support from the Government of India, I fully understand that Maharashtra is fighting a very difficult battle and I appreciate that fact and so many other states and it is important that full support of the Government of India goes to the people of Maharashtra and the Government of Maharashtra,” the Congress leader said.
