Bhopal, May 7: A Congress delegation led by former Union Minister Suresh Pachouri and senior party member on Tuesday handed over the list of 21 lakh farmers to former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, whose loans the ruling Kamal Nath-led state government waived off.
Pachauri told media the Congress had promised to waive off farmers’ debt of upto Rs 2 lakh and the process was initiated soon after the party formed the government under the leadership of Kamal Nath.
So far, 21 lakh farmers have benefitted under the Jai Jawan Jay Kisan Debt Waiver scheme before the model code of conduct came into force on March 10, he asserted.
The Congress leader stated that under the scheme, a total of 55 lakh farmers were eligible to avail its benefit.
The move is seen as a reaction to Chouhan’s allegations that Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath have given contradictory remarks on the farm loan waivers.
“Both Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister Kamal Nath gave contradictory statements on farm loan waiver”, the BJP leader had told media on Sunday (May 5)
“While the former is saying that the loans of farmers were waived within two hours of forming a Congress Government in the State, the latter has sent messages to lakhs of farmers on their mobiles stating that though the application for waiving loans have been received it cannot be granted as Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the Lok Sabha elections is in place”, he had stated.
