New Delhi, June 12: The core group of Congress party headed by AK Antony is set to meet on Wednesday to discuss strategy for the upcoming Parliament session and Rahul Gandhi’s unwillingness to continue as party chief. Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to be appointed as the working president of the grand old party.
The Congress core group is meeting ahead of the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha, therefore, issues related to appointment of Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha is also to be discussed .
Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has to nominate the congress leaders in the lok sabha as well as in the Rahya Sabha.
The Congress party is mulling to name a senior leader as its ‘interim president’ to cope with an emergency situation in case Rahul Gandhi immediately steps down from his post.
Some names have reportedly been proposed in this connection, said party sources. They include Sushilkumar Shinde and Mallikarjun Kharge, the party would then preside over a collegium of leaders and take part in collective decision-making without Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi has insisted that he will not stay Congress president following the party’s rout in the Lok Sabha polls.
In the mix is Jyotiraditya Scindia as well so that the younger element is also assuaged.
The party had earlier considered a proposal for three working presidents, one each from the north, south and eastern India, and perhaps a fourth from western India.
Gandhi offered to quit on May 25 during a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), which unanimously rejected his offer and authorised him to overhaul and restructure the Party at all levels. Chairperson Sonia Gandhi will visit Rae Bareli, her parliamentary constituency, on Wednesday to thank her voters for re-electing her with an overwhelming margin.
She will be accompanied by her daughter and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
