Cyclone Gaja: Death toll in Tamil Nadu reaches to 33

Chennai, Nov 17: The death toll due to cyclonic storm Gaja, which hit coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, has reached to 33, Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said on Saturday.

Addressing media at Salem, Palaniswami stated that 20 men, 11 women, and 2 children died due to the cyclone that crossed the Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam districts between 12.30 a.m. and 2.30 a.m. on Friday.

The cyclone left a trail of destruction in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Cuddalore, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts.

Due to the cyclone, 70 livestock and several goats, poultry and deer have also died.

Some 127,000 trees were uprooted by the strong cyclonic winds that touched a maximum speed of about 120 kmph, the Chief Minister added.

The state government is distributing water, milk and food to the people affected by the calamity.

About 177,500 people are staying in 351 relief camps in the cyclone-affected areas.

According to the Chief Minister, about 30,000 electricity poles were broken, and 105 power sub-stations affected.

About 10,000 personnel have deployed in the cyclone-affected coastal districts to repair the installations.

7 killed, over 8,000 flee homes as quakes, landslides hit Indonesia

Jakarta, Nov 17: Seven people were killed and more than 8,000 others fled their homes as landslides and quakes struck Indonesia’s West Sulawesi province, officials said on Saturday.

The victims died during the evacuation, Pasamboan Pangloli, head of rehabilitation and reconstruction unit of the disaster management agency in the district, told Xinhua news agency.

The landslides also buried at least 8 houses in the district, the official said.

More than 8,000 people fled their homes and were taking shelters as several moderate quakes with magnitudes from 5.1 to 5.5 struck the district in the past few days, said Pangloli.

West Sulawesi province borders Central Sulawesi province which was devastated by a series of powerful quakes and an ensuing tsunami by the end of September that left over 2,000 people dead.

Tamil Nadu: Cyclone Gaja kills 11, Nagapattinam district heavily damaged

Chennai, Nov 16: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswamy on Friday said that the cyclonic storm ‘Gaja’ claimed 11 lives so far and Nagapattinam district has been heavily damaged due to the calamity. 

According to the authorities, the cyclone crossed the coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam districts between 12.30 a.m. and 2.30 a.m. with wind speeds of about 110-120 kmph.

Nagapattinam district has been heavily damaged by Gaja Cyclone. In total, 471 relief camps have been established in which 81,948 ppl are staying, the Chief Minister told media.

“We”ll seek assistance from the centre after assessment is done by our officials in the affected areas”, he added.

The state government has announced ex-gratia of 10 lakh rupees to the kin of the deceased, 1 lakh rupees to those severely injured and 25 thousand to those who received minor injuries.

Relief centres were set up in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Thiruvarur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rains till Friday evening.

Isolated rains are likely over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, north Kerala and several areas of south Karnataka.
