New Delhi, July 12 :The Congress party on Thursday distanced itself from the ‘ Hindu Pakistan’ remarks of senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and advised him to realise party’s historic responsibility while “choosing words” to counter BJP’s hatred.
In a series of tweets, Congress communication in-charge, Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Modi Govt thrives upon an unprecedented atmosphere of division, bigotry, hatred, intolerance and polarisation for last four years. Congress, on the other hand, represents India’s civilisational values of pluralism, diversity, compassion and harmony between faiths and ethnicities,” senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a series of tweets.
“India’s values and fundamentals are an unequivocal guarantee of our civilisational role and set us apart from the divisive idea of Pakistan. All Congress leaders must realise this historic responsibility bestowed upon us while choosing words and phraseology to reject BJP’s hatred,” he added.
“India’s democracy is strong. And it will not allow India to become Pakistan. Governments will come and go, but India’s constitution will not allow India to become Pakistan. I appeal to all Congress leaders and workers to be careful about the statements they make,” Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergil.
“Every Indian knows that the Congress represents a pluralistic, multi religious, multi-linguistic society. Irrespective of the government which comes in power the Indian democracy won’t allow India to become Pakistan. Jaiveer Shergill said.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that India will become a ‘Hindu Pakistan’ if BJP were to come to power in 2019.
Defending his comments, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor asked Bharatiya Janata Party to clarify on record what the saffron party believes in “Hindu Rashtra concept” or a “secular republic”.
After the ruling BJP has reacted and demanded his apology over his comments on Wednesday, Tharoor said, “If BJP does not believe in Hindu Rashtra concept then they should say it on record that we do not believe in a Hindu Rashtra but in a secular republic.”
Tharoor expressed fears that if the BJP goes on to mark a repeat of their current strength in the Lok Sabha in 2019, then it will tear up the Indian constitution and create ‘Hindu Pakistan’.
