New Delhi, April 19: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman for failing to provide free grains to hungry families and cash to needy when people have run out of cash and are forced to stand in lines to collect free cooked food.
Calling Modi government a ‘heartless government’, former finance minister said ” Only a heartless government will stand by and do nothing”.
“Why can”t government distribute, free of cost, a small part of the 77 million tonnes of grain with FCI to families who need the grain to feed themselves,” he asked government referring to thousands of migrant workers who have been stranded at various states in the country due to lockdown that has been imposed to contain the spread of coronavirus.
“Why cannot government save them from hunger and protect their dignity by transferring cash to every poor family,These two questions are both economic and moral questions. Narendra Modi and Nirmala Sitharaman have failed to answer both questions, as the nation watches helplessly,” the former Finance Minister said on Twitter.
He said more and more people have run out of cash and are standing in queues for free cooked food.
“There is overwhelming evidence that more and more people have run out of cash and are forced to stand in lines to collect free cooked food. Only a heartless government will stand by and do nothing,” he said.
Migrants have been stranding in different metro including Ahmedabad due to lockdown which was announced suddenly at 8pm on March 23 till April 14. PM Modi then again addressed the nation and extended the lockdown till May 3 to contain the virus.
