Chidambaram attacks Modi government for skyrocketing fuel prices, joblessness

New Delhi, June 11: Former finance minister, P Chidambaram on Monday launched a fresh attack on the Modi government for not bringing fuel prices under GST, rising inflation and joblessness.

On the issue of Government contemplating to bring petrol under GST, Chidambaram said, ” If you bring petrol & diesel under GST, prices will come down. BJP is in Centre and they have governments in most of the states. Why are they blaming states? They have a majority & they should do it.”

A flawed GST continues to haunt trade and business. GSTR Form 2 (for input tax credit) and GSTR Form 3 (for net tax liability) have not been notified so far. Tax liability is being calculated on the temporary GSTR Form 3B, which is illegal.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said there exists no global reason for increasing the prices of petrol, diesel & LPG as compared to the prices in September 2014, when fuel prices were up globally.

The Congress leader accused the Modi government of fleecing the helpless consumers on fuel prices and said, “There is widespread anger about artificially fixed prices of petrol, diesel & LPG. There is absolutely no reason why prices should be higher today than what they were in May-June 2014. “

“It is nothing but a case of fleecing the helpless consumer,” he added.

Chidambaram slams Modi Govt over joblessness

The Congress leader also took a shot at the government for employment and asked why the Labour Bureau Survey for Oct-Dec 2017 not been released.

“Labour Bureau numbers reveal that a few thousand jobs are created — or added — every quarter that is a far cry from the 2 crore jobs a year that was promised as part of achhe din,” Chidambaram added.

Launching a scathing attack on the Modi government on the  rising inflation,Chidambaram argued that the hike in repo rate which will raise Interest rates is enough proof that these measures are going to burn a hole in the pockets of the aam aadmi.

“Inflation is on the rise. Inflation expectations are high. No more proof is necessary than the hike in the repo rate a few days ago. Interest rates will rise, throwing more burden on consumers & producers,” Chidamabram said.

Chidambaram has stated that the government has continued taxing petrol, diesel, and even LPG. It is squeezing money from people in such taxes and spending some from it on public amenities.

Chidambaram claimed it was possible to cut up to Rs 25 per litre in petrol prices but the government will not do so. The former finance minister has been informing the Indian citizens through his twitter that the bonanza to central government is Rs 25 on every litre of petrol and this money rightfully belongs to the average consumer.

“Central government saves Rs 15 on every litre of petrol due to fall in crude oil prices. Central government puts additional tax of Rs 10 on every litre of petrol. “It is possible to cut up to Rs 25 per litre, but the government will not. They will cheat the people by cutting price by Rs 1 or 2 per litre of petrol,” he said on Twitter.
