Chidambaram arrested by CBI team

New Delhi, Aug 21: About 100 Delhi cops and 20 CBI officials entered the house of former finance minister P Chidambaram by scaling the boundary wall and running along the roof in full view of television cameras and arrested him in a highly dramatic manner for alleged corruption in INX media case.

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official jumped the gate of P Chidambaram’s residence to get inside. CBI has issued a Look-Out Notice against him.

Chidambaram was seated in the middle of a white car with CBI personnel sitting on either side as he was driven straight to the agency’s headquarters, located barely a few kilometres away from his house.

Sources said CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla himself was present at the headquarters along with top officers for the questioning of former minister. After completing the formalities, Chidambaram was arrested and will be produced in court on Thursday.

The moment Chidambaram arrived at his home from the press conference at the Congress headquarter on Akbar Road, the CBI personnel scaled walls and entered the premises.

A small group of slogan-shouting Congress workers were contained by Delhi Police personnel from posing any obstructions. The entire operation was swiftly executed within half an hour of his arrival in Jor Bagh.

Sources said that the team of lawyers were present with Chidambaram at the time when he was taken into custody.

A team of CBI personnel had been keeping a surveillance outside Chidambaram’s house ever since the Delhi High Court denied his anticipatory bail on Tuesday. The CBI team could not find him home but they swarmed the area keeping a vigil on the visitors.

Karti Chidambaram tweets “The drama and spectacle being enacted by the agencies is to simply sensationalise and satisfy the voyeuristic pleasure of some.”

Clearing the air once and for all after day-long accusations of evading arrest , Congress leader P Chidambaram appeared at AICC HQ and said he has not been accused of any offence and expressed shock that he was accused of hiding from the law, saying,”I bow down to the orders of the Supreme Court.”

Saying that he was “aghast that I was accused of hiding from the law”, the Congress leader vowed to “respect the law, even if unequal.”

Former Union minister P Chidambaram arrived at the party office of the Congress this evening and said, “All we wanted is a hearing. No one is running away.”

“In INX Media case, I’ve not been accused of any offence nor any one else incl any member of my family. There is no charge sheet filed by either ED or CBI before a competent court,’ Chidambaram said.

” I believe that the foundation of a democracy is liberty, most precious article of the constitution is Article 21 that guarantees life and liberty. If I’m asked to choose between life and liberty, I will choose liberty,” Chidambaram said.

Top Senior Congress leaders Kapil Sibal Ahmad Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Abhishek manu Singhvi and other were also present at the press briefing.

Rejecting the news played by the media, Chidambaram said, “I was aghast that I was accused of hiding from the law, on the contrary, I was seeking protection of law. My lawyers tell that cases will be listed on Friday. I bow down to orders of SC. I respect law even if it is applied with an unequal hand by probe agencies.”

” In last 24hrs much has happened, that has caused concern to some&confusion to many. In INX Media case, I’ve not been accused of any offence nor any one else incl any member of my family. There is no charge sheet filed by either ED or CBI before a competent court,” he added.

Since the high court judgment, the CBI had visited his residence in Delhi twice and two lookout circulars have been issued against him by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI. The Supreme Court has refused an urgent hearing on his request for anticipatory bail. The court will hear the petition on Friday.
