Chhattisgarh: Nine killed in Gas Pipeline blast at Bhilai Steel Plant

Raipur, Oct 9: At least nine people were killed after a blast took place in the gas pipeline of Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.

The blast occurred in a pipeline near the coke oven section at the steel plant.

Police and a rescue team rushed to the spot. Injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

After the news of blast, the shares of SAIL fell as much as over 4 per cent.

“In an unfortunate incident on Tuesday at around 10.30 a.m., there was a fire in the gas pipeline of Bhilai Steel Plant’s Coke Oven Battery Complex No 11 during a scheduled maintenance job,” the company said in a statement.

It said:”The fire has been controlled. So far, nine persons have lost their lives and 14 are undergoing medical treatment. All resources have been mobilized to provide adequate care to the injured.”

The state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) operates the plant.

In June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the modernised and expanded Bhilai Steel Plant.
