New Delhi, Jan 21: Former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday said that it is imminent that Narendra Modi government will train its guns at International Monetary Fund and Chief Economist Gita Gopinath following the organisation’s downward revision of the Indian economy’s growth.

“IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath was one of the first to denounce demonetisation. I suppose we must prepare ourselves for an attack by government ministers on the IMF and Dr Gita Gopinath,” Chidambaram tweeted.

The IMF on Monday slashed India’s growth forecast to 4.8 per cent in 2019 and at 5.8 per cent in 2020. The second figure is the biggest markdown for any emerging market.

In its World Economic Outlook released in Davos, Switzerland, the IMF has said, “Domestic demand has slowed sharply than expected amid stress in the nonbank financial sector and a decline in credit growth.”

“We have projected global growth at 2.9 per cent for 2019 and 3.3 per cent for 2020, which is 0.1 percentage point lower than the October estimates,” the IMF chief said.

Aim is to take Delhi forward, eliminate corruption, says Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwa

New Delhi, Jan 21 Expecting that his will win 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said the aim of his party is to eliminate corruption and take Delhi forward.

Kejriwal will be filing his nomination on Tuesday from the New Delhi constituency for the February 8 Assembly polls, as he failed to file it on Monday due to delay.

In a tweet in Hindi, he said the fight is between other parties and the work done by AAP.

“On one hand – there are parties like BJP, JD (U), LJP, JJP, Congress, RJD. On the other hand – there are schools, hospitals, water, electricity, free travel to women and public of Delhi. My aim is to defeat corruption and take Delhi forward. They all aim to – defeat me,” he tweeted.

He held a roadshow with his wife and his two children in tow along with Aam Aadmi Party leaders and supporters, but could not file his nomination papers during the day as planned due to delay.

The Delhi Assembly elections are slated to be held on February 8 whereas results will be announced on February 11.

“Today, I had to file the nomination and the office closes at 3 p.m. but I saw so much love from the people (in the roadshow) that I did not want to end this. I was told at 2 p.m. that we are behind schedule and I should stop here. But I was not able to leave you people alone midway like this. The roadshow is ending now as the police permission is over. Tomorrow morning, I will go with my family to file the nomination. I am thankful to all for giving so much love and support. You have walked a long distance with me,” Kejriwal said.

Apart from his wife Sunita Kejriwal and their two children, Kejriwal was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in an open vehicle as a sea of supporters holding brooms (the party’s election symbol) and placards walked along.

Amid heavy security during the roadshow, the participants chanted the Aam Aadmi Party’s election slogan — “Acchhe beete panch saal, lage raho Kejriwal”. Many supporters were seen dancing to the tune of the party theme song.
