Alok Verma’s reinstatement, a lesson for government: Kharge

New Delhi, Jan 8: Welcoming the Supreme Court order to reinstate Alok Kumar Verma as the Central Bureau of Investigation Director, Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said that the judgement is a “lesson” for the ruling government.

“We’re not against one individual, welcome SC’s judgement, it’s a lesson for government”, Kharge told media.

“Today you’ll use these agencies to pressurise people, tomorrow somebody else will”.

What will happen to democracy then?, the Congress leader asked.

The Apex Court today restored the powers of the CBI Director Alok Verma as it set aside the centre’s decision to divest him of his powers to function as the head of the probe agency.

While Pronouncing the judgement on behalf of Chief Justice Gogoi, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that the selection committee will meet within seven days from Tuesday and till then Verma will resist from taking any key decisions.

In a dramatic action on the intervening night of October 23-24 last year, the Narendra Modi government divested CBI chief Alok Verma of his charge after amid a bitter feud with his deputy Rakesh Asthana.
