CBI arrests GST Council officer over bribery charges

CBI raids

New Delhi, Aug 3: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday booked GST Council officer Monish Malhotra for accepting and demanding bribe when he was working with the Central Excise Department.

Malhotra has been recently posted as Superintendent in the GST Council at the headquarters in Delhi.

Along with Monish, a private tax consultant Manas Patra has been also arrested by the investigative agency  over alleged corruption charges. Some other officers are also under the CBI scanner.

Patra is considered as a close aide of Malhotra.

Accused have been booked under the charges of  criminal conspiracy and demanding illegal gratification in the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.

The FIR accused Malhotra, a resident of Kalkaji in south Delhi, of indulging in corrupt practices of extending undue favours to businessmen by not taking action against them in lieu of periodical illegal gratification.

Patra is accused of being in regular contact with Malhotra and many other Excise Department officers for working as a conduit for them to accept bribes on their behalf.
