Cauvery Issue: Karnataka refuses water splurge until Dec

Tamil Nadu, Sep 26, 2016: The Karnataka government on Monday asked the Supreme Court to modify an earlier order on sharing Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu and said it couldn’t release any more water setting the stage for a face-off with the judiciary.

In a plea before the apex court, the state government sought modification of its order asking it to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu.

It has expressed its inability to release water as directed by the apex court and the government added that its reservoirs do not have adequate water.

Earlier, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, informed him about the resolution passed by the state legislature, and that the government would be approaching the SC seeking modification of the interim order in such a way that it permits Karnataka “to account water for water before the end of the season in January 2017 instead of accounting on September 27 as directed in the interim order.
