Cartoonist Bala gets bail after arrest over ‘obscene portrayal’ of Tamil Nadu CM

New Delhi, Nov 6: Noted cartoonist G Balakrishnan (36) alias Bala was granted bail on Monday, a day after being arrested for obscene and inappropriate depiction of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy and other officials in a cartoon.

Bala was nabbed by the crime branch wing of Tamil Nadu Police from Chennai, on the basis of a complaint filed by Tiruneveli District Collector Sandeep Nanduri, who was also caricatured in the cartoon along with the city police chief.

The cartoonist had been charged under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.

The cartoon was uploaded on a website on October 26, days after a man and his wife set themselves and their two kids on blaze at the Tirunelveli Collectorate complex allegedly because of harassment by a money-lender.

While the woman and her two children died on the day of the incident i.e. October 23, while the man succumbed to injuries later. The incident invited flak  from political parties and civil society groups over usury.

In the cartoon dated October 24, he criticised Tirunelveli police commissioner, district collector, and the Chief Minister, holding them responsible for the death.
