Rajya Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia is a former leader of the Congress who defected to the BJP in 2020. His defection was said to have led to the collapse of the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in Madhya Pradesh, which paved way for the formation of a BJP government under Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

Scindia, 50, belongs to the House of Scindia that once ruled Gwalior. He was a Lok Sabha member from MP’s Guna constituency, until his defeat there in the 2019 general election. His father Madhavrao Scindia was a nine-term Lok Sabha member.

Scindia served as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power in former PM Manmohan Singh’s Cabinet between October 2012 and May 2014.

Scindia is the grandson of BJP co-founder Vijaya Raje Scindia.
