Former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram while addressing media on the Union Budget of 2018 said, “Jobs is the number one issue. Jobs are not being created. Industrial growth has declined from 9.8% in 2015-16 to 6.8% in 2016-17 to 2.7% in 2017-18. In light of this, budget 2018 was big let down.”
Taking a jibe at Modi government’s National health Programme he said that the promise of ₹5lac per family for secondary and tertiary healthcare is a big jumla.
Chidambaram also criticised the budget over its old and static structure he said that finance minister has no new ideas and has fallen back on the tried and failed MUDRA scheme.
The average size of the Mudra loan is ₹43000. This is tokenism and will not create even one job, he added.
Money allocated to e-markets and Operation Green amount to a pittance. This is a defeatist budget the former finance minister claimed.
