New Delhi, Aug 8: Both the houses of Parliament adjourned for the day after the session resumed as a mark of respect to Tamil Nadu’s iconic political leader M Karunanidhi, who passed away yesterday.
Karunanidhi was a multifaceted personality and was actively engaged in social and public life, addressing Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu said in an obituary reference as the house assembled.
“He has served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five terms. In his passing away, the country has lost an able administrator and an outstanding statesman. The House deeply mourns his death,” he asserted.
While in Lok Sabha, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan also read out an obituary reference.
“With profound sorrow, I’ve to inform the House about the sad demise of Karunanidhi who passed away on 7 Aug 18. He served as CM of Tamil Nadu for 5 times. In his demise, the country has lost highly popular and eminent personality”, she said.
Following the obituary references, the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha observed two minutes of silence and adjourned for the day.
On Tuesday, the central government had announced a day’s national mourning for Karunanidhi.
A five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK President Karunanidhi died following a prolonged illness at Kauvery Hospital on Tuesday evening.
