Both BJP, Congress eyeing each other’s MLAs, leaders in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, July 17 : Ever since Shivraj Singh Chouhan returned as the Chief Minister more than three months ago, the Madhya Pradesh politics is in flux, with both the BJP and the Congress trying to woo each others MLAs and leaders.

Not only MLAs, but even their relatives are game for those out to poach politicians in the state, wherein the BJP seems to be at an advantage at present.

In March, 22 Congress MLAs resigned from the Congress along with former central minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, leading to the fall of the Congress government led by Kamal Nath.

Chouhan took oath on March 23 as the Chief Minister for record fourth term.

Madhya Pradesh Congress got another shock when its MLA Pradyuman Singh Lodhi resigned both from the party and from the Assembly membership.

Hours after he joined the BJP on Sunday, Pradyuman was made Chairman of the Civil Supplies Corporation in the rank of a Cabinet minister. Lodhi was a legislator from Bada Malhera seat in Chhatarpur district.

Now, the ruling BJP is said to be eyeing Banda MLA Tarbar Singh Lodhi and Damoh MLA Rahul Lodhi – both from the Congress and relatives of Pradyuman Singh Lodhi. The BJP could use the services of Pradyuman to try to woo them to the ruling camp.

It is another matter that both the MLAs have asserted that they are in the Congress and will remain in the Congress. Interestingly, both MLAs are also said to be close to former Chief Minister and former Union Minister Uma Bharti.

The BJP currently has 107 MLAs in the Assembly. With this, the Congress’ strength in the House has reduced to 91. There are now 25 vacant seats in the Assembly.

Agriculture Minister Kamal Patel claimed that many of the Congress MLAs were in contact with the ruling BJP since they were convinced that the future of the opposition party was dark.

Patel alleged that the Congress had made many promises during the last Assembly elections but failed to fulfil them on coming to power. Due to this, the writing on the wall was clear to the Congress leaders whom, he claimed, people were not even allowing to enter their constituencies.

Political analyst Arvind Mishra pointed out that neither ideology nor any principle guided the political party and hence all of them were busy making attempts to strengthen their respective organisations through whatever means they could.

Amid claims by the Congress that the BJP was busy in horse-trading to strengthen itself in Madhya Pradesh, the opposition party has made Chouhan’s brother-in-law Sanjay Singh Masani as the Vice-President of the state unit of the party and also the coordinator for campaigning during bye-elections for the vacant Assembly seats.

Political observers said that the coming days could witness more political crossovers since there were politicians who could not remain out of power for long and there were others who were worried over their future in the BJP.

The Election Commission on Monday sought a “detailed report” from the chief electoral officer of Madhya Pradesh on Congress leader Kamal Nath’s remarks against a woman candidate during a poll rally in the state.

Addressing a poll meeting on Sunday in Gwalior’s Dabra town where the BJP has fielded Imarti Devi, Nath said the Congress candidate was a “simple person” unlike the opponent who was an “item”.

Imarti Devi and 21 other MLAs loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia had resigned from the Congress and the state assembly and joined the BJP in March, in the process bringing down the Nath government.

“Based on the report received from the chief electoral officer of MP, we have asked for a detailed report. It would be with the Commission on Tuesday. Based on it, the Commission would take a view,” said a senior EC functionary.

The National Commission for Women had also forwarded the matter to the Election Commission for necessary action.

“By the time we received reference from NCW, we had already sought a detailed report from CEO, Madhya Pradesh,” the EC official said.

Bypolls to 28 Madhya Pradesh assembly seats will be held on November 3 and the counting of votes will take place on November 10.

He said that no section of society had been ignored during his rule and special developmental works taken up for those pushed to the margins of society.

Aurangabad (Bihar): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday took a dig at the RJD leadership, and said — without taking names — that when ‘husband’ went to jail his ‘wife’ was made the Chief Minister in the past.

He was obviously referring to Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi.

Nitish, who leads the Janata Dal-United, also claimed that law and order during the earlier RJD rule was poor.

“Everyone knows what all happened during the rule of husband and wife. All kinds of crimes were reported. People used to desist from venturing out as evening hours approached. But when we got a chance to serve the people, we carried out developmental works in all sectors,” the Chief Minister said while addressing public rallies in Rafiganj in Aurangabad district and Sherghati in Gaya district.

“When the wife (Rabri) was made the Chief Minister, nothing was done for the welfare of women. But during our rule, we ensured 50 per cent reservation for women in rural local bodies,” the JD-U leader claimed.

He said that no section of society had been ignored during his rule and special developmental works taken up for those pushed to the margins of society.

“Today, not only the country but the whole world is taking note of works done in Bihar, but some people are busy finding faults,” he remarked.

Nitish also said that his government also worked for the welfare of minority communities without discrimination, apart from women empowerment.

Patna, Oct 19 : After Kashmiri militants, Article 370, Left extremism and Jinnah, the Indian Ocean is the latest to enter the political war of words in Bihar at a time when the campaign for the Assembly polls is in full swing.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad Yadav on Monday attacked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and asked him: “Do we now have to send the Indian Ocean for the development of Bihar?”

Lalu posted a cartoon and a statement in the Bhojpuri language on social media to slam Nitish for his statement that big industries had not come in Bihar as it was not located in a coastal area.

While giving a clarification on the lack of jobs in Bihar, Nitish Kumar, during a virtual rally in the second week of October had said that although the state was on the development path, big industries had not come here as it is not situated near a sea coast. Industrialists generally prefer coastal areas to establish industries, he said.

In the cartoon posted by Lalu, a person is asking a group of people carrying water why they were carrying it, was there a fire somewhere? In reply the water-carriers say they are carrying sea water as Nitish Kumar is saying bring the ocean to Bihar for industries to be established.

“You cannot hide the failure of 15 years by making such excuses,” Lalu said in his tweet.

Lalu Prasad asked Nitish Kumar to go home and relax as you are tired now.

Lalu Prasad is currently in Ranchi jail after he was convicted in the fodder scam. The tweet is posted on his Twitter handle @laluprasadrjd.

The JDU-BJP government is facing the heat after RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav announced that the RJD will provide 10 lakh government jobs to the youths of Bihar in the first cabinet meeting if his party comes to power.
