Bollywood slams journalist for writing offensive article about Priyanka Chopra

Indian celebrities like actresses Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Swara Bhasker, and singer Sona Mohapatra, have criticised journalist Mariah Smith for writing a “racist” article about actress Priyanka Chopra and American singer Nick Jonas’ wedding.

In The New York Mag’s TheCut article, the journalist called Priyanka, 36, a “global scam artist”, who tricked young Jonas, 26, into a lifelong commitment when all he really wanted was a fling.

“Priyanka: She is a modern-day scam artist, in my opinion. That’s right: Nicholas Jonas married into a fraudulent relationship against his will this past Saturday, December the 1st, and I’ll tell you why I think so…,” it read.

After the article got circulated on social media, it garnered huge flak from some of the members of Indian film fraternity.

“For a publication that ‘shows women what they are made of’, TheCut has a lot to answer for. The article on Priyanka was sexist, racist and disgusting. Also it’s written by a woman which is so sad. It reeks of envy and bitterness. Mariah, shame on you,” Sonam tweeted on Wednesday.

Swara also expressed her disappointment on the micro-blogging site.

“Depressed with the state of the world and current affairs? Here is some good old fashioned puerile filth published by TheCut to add some pointless venom to your day. Also someone invite Mariah to an Indian wedding, might assuage some of her misguided angst! Yellow Journalism,” tweeted the “Tanu Weds Manu” actress.

In the article, Smith also said: “Priyanka’s indulgences and what she views as necessities speak volumes to her personality and what she’ll do, or think she needs to do, for her career….”

Smith also slammed the couple, who got married in Jodhpur last week, saying they had their high profile wedding just to make money.

“Priyanka and Nick are finding ways for their ‘love’ make them money – circumventing the methods used by the celebrities of yore, who stuck to selling their wedding or baby photos to magazines,” the article added.

Veteran writer-producer Vinta Nanda was left “shocked” after reading Smith’s write-up.

“What does the writer mean by saying that he is gotten married against his will to a fraudulent relationship? Does the writer not see in pictures that it was one of the most beautiful weddings ever?” added Nanda.

Sona found the article “deeply disgusting”.

“To character assassinate a hardworking, driven, achiever like Priyanka Chopra in this warped, petty manner and for TheCut to publish such a low-brow piece is the lowest of the lows. ‘Priyanka’s plan to make this Nick Jonas opportunity her forever b***h?’ Sick,” Sona sighed.

Priyanka, a former Miss World, is one of the leading Bollywood actresses. The “Mary Kom” star is also popular in the US for her American TV show “Quantico”.

‘Rangeela Raja’ passed with three cuts by FCAT

Mumbai, Dec 13 : The battle of words with the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) has ended for Pahlaj Nihalani. His film “Rangeela Raja”, which had been ordered 20 cuts by the Examining Committee, has now been passed with only three cuts by the Film Certificate Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), also known as the Tribunal.

But according to Nihalani, even those cuts are unjustified.

“They have objection on my using names from the Ramayan and the Mahabharat. Do they think they own these scriptures? The holy books belong to all of us. And we know how to respect them.

“They also feel I was disrespecting women in the film. I’ve never done that in my 40 years as a filmmaker. In our family, women run the show,” Nihalani said.

He feels the CBFC has practised a vendetta policy against him.

“Since I was the CBFC chairperson and I am no longer there, they decided to teach me a lesson. The 20 cuts that they originally ordered were all unwarranted, unjustified and grossly unfair.

“If I was the CBFC chairperson, I wouldn’t have ordered a single cut in my film. But then I don’t know where my successor is. I’ve never met him during my attempts to get my film out of the CBFC’s clutches,” he said, referring to current censor board chief Prasoon Joshi.

Now that the Govinda-starrer has been cleared, Nihalani will release it on January 11.

“I can’t release it in December with Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Zero’ or Ranveer Singh’s ‘Simmba’. Who will pay for the heavy losses I’ve suffered because of the delay?”

Web shows are more experimental: Purab

Directed by Danish Aslam, the second edition of Voot Original web series “It’s Not That Simple” also features Swara Bhasker and Sumeet Vyas.

purab kohli

New Delhi, Dec 13 : Actor Purab Kohli will soon be seen in the second season of web series “Its Not That Simple”. He says content and costing wise, web shows are more experimental than movies but he loves doing both.

“The good thing about web series is that it is the current trend. Many people like to watch it. It keeps you engaged for a longer period of time. You follow stories, it can be more fleshed out and told extensively,” Purab told IANS in an email interview.

“Web shows are more experimental in their content and costing wise. On the other hand, I love doing films. Both of them are very engaging,” he added.

Directed by Danish Aslam, the second edition of Voot Original web series “It’s Not That Simple” also features Swara Bhasker and Sumeet Vyas.

Swara plays Meera – confident, ambitious and a strong woman who becomes the mouthpiece of a modern woman who compels you to ask – Does the sex matter?

“The main pointers for me were that Meera’s character is moving forward so that straight away makes for a good second season and the show is moving in a direction. The character is growing and expanding itself. I mean finding more ground to head on so that itself is exciting,” said Purab.

“For me, the character Angad was very interesting. He is blatant, straightforward and at the same time very honest and he comes across as someone who you don’t like in the beginning but once you see how honest and straightforward he is of what he wants and what he says, I think. It’s quite refreshing to see someone like that,” added the “Rock On!!” actor.

On the show’s second season, he shared: “I think the first season dealt with breaking away and now the second season is where she (Meera) is finding new ground, she’s discovering new ground and finding a new self. Finding herself out of her marriage and traditional definitions of Meera, she is now trying to find new Meera.

“That Meera wants to achieve and be loved. I think that is the aspect people should look out for and of course, the introduction of mainly two known male characters played by Sumeet and me. Both are very interesting characters.”

Purab had also starred in the American science fiction drama web series “Sense8”.

Talking about the difference between shooting for an Indian web show and an American one, he pointed out: “Foreign productions function differently than Indian productions. The training is different. Outplay of the role is different, also the budgets are massively different so, it’s not fair to even compare.”
