Starting her two-day visit to poll-bound Assam, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi hit out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its “silence” on CAA-NRC (Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens).
Addressing a rally in Tezpur on Tuesday, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “All over India, the BJP talks of implementing the CAA but why does it become mum on it in Assam?”
Terming the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as “threats to Assam’s existence”, Priyanka Gandhi said they have a problem with the state’s unity.
“Union Home Minister Amit Shah has a problem with the unity of the unity and Assam. He has spoken about CAA-NRC across the country then why does he become mum on when in Assam? Before the elections, the BJP had said NRC won’t be implemented in Assam. What happened to that?” Priyanka Gandhi said.
Assam witnessed violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and some people reportedly also lost their lives in the protests. The protestors saw the law as a threat to their cultural identity and livelihood.
As per the government, the objective of the CAA is to grant Indian citizenship to people of minority communities Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who had come to India till December 31, 2014 due to religious persecution in these countries.
