BJP practising politics of violence and polarisation: Congress

BJP follow in the footsteps of those who supported the British and were against the freedom struggle.

All citizens have the right to protest and it is the Government’s duty to listen to them. You can not misuse your power to suppress voices of dissent. INC and other opposition parties gave notice in the house to discuss this.

People have apprehensions about CAA, NRC. The Government needs to address those.

The ideology, thought and governance of the ruling party has violence (not physical). There have been 4 incidents of gunshots being fired in the national capital. There’s a lot of difference in what PM Modi says and does.

The statement made by BJP leader against Gandhi ji is appalling. The PM merely expressing his displeasure is not enough, it needs to be seen what action is taken against such a Minister. We demand that the PM clarify his stand on this in Parliament by tomorrow.

We can understand why one after a the other senior BJP leaders are making such statements against Gandhi ji. They are disparaging the freedom struggle. They follow in the footsteps of those who supported the British and were against the freedom struggle.

Orchestrating by inciting violence in Delhi shows BJP is desperate for the Delhi elections, they are inflicting deep wounds on democracy.

US senators hear closing arguments of Trump impeachment trial

Trump impeachment trial live updates

Washington, Feb 4 : US senators are hearing closing arguments by House managers and President Donald Trump’s defence team on Monday as the impeachment trial is scheduled to end later this week.

Congressman Jason Crow, a Democrat from Colorado, speaking on behalf of the House managers, called impeachment an “extraordinary remedy” and “a tool only to be used in rare instances of grave conduct.”

White House counsel Pat Cipollone defended the president by accusing Democrats of an attempt to “overturn the results of one election and to try to interfere” in the ongoing presidential race.

The two sides have up to four hours, equally divided for them, to make their own case.

After the closing arguments wrap up, the Senate is expected to reconvene in legislative session, in which senators are allowed to speak on the impeachment case.

Senators will vote on articles of impeachment against Trump on Wednesday, according to a resolution it adopted last week.

Monday’s session came days after the Senate, where Republicans have a narrow majority over Democrats, voted to reject the effort in seeking witnesses and documents for the proceeding, paving the way for a quick end.

The House, controlled by Democrats, impeached Trump in November last year for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, charges that the White House has refuted.

A whistleblower raised concern in an anonymous complaint last summer about the White House’s interactions with Ukraine, triggering a Democrat-led impeachment inquiry against Trump.

The US president was alleged to have pressed his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, into launching investigations that could politically benefit him. Furthermore, the White House allegedly tried to cover it up.

In a tweet on Monday, Trump called the impeachment a partisan “hoax,” while lashing out at Democrats.

“Nothing will ever satisfy the Do Nothing, Radical Left Dems!” Trump wrote.

According to the US Constitution, the House shall have the “sole Power of Impeachment,” while the Senate shall have the “sole Power to try all Impeachments.”

Conviction can only happen in the Senate and requires at least two-thirds of its members, or 67 senators, to vote in favour of at least one article of impeachment after a trial. Currently, the Senate has 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two independents who caucus with Democrats.

No sitting US president has ever been removed from office by Congress through impeachment.

Hegde’s remarks on freedom movement: Congress says slap sedition case

Published

Anant Kumar Hegde

New Delhi, Feb 3 : The Congress hit out at the ruling BJP on Monday over its leader Anantkumar Hegde’s remarks against the Mahatma Gandhi-led freedom movement, saying a sedition case should be slapped against the former Union minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi must apologise for it.

The opposition party demanded that the prime minister must come to Parliament and clarify his position on Hegde’s “objectionable” remarks, and asserted that it was time for Modi to prove whether his loyalty was towards Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse or the Father of the Nation.

Questioning the freedom movement led by Gandhi, Hegde said it was an “adjustment” with the British.

“They are disparaging the national movement. If the prime minister and the BJP government are sincere about the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, we demand that the PM comes to Parliament and clarifies his position,” Congress’s senior spokesperson Anand Sharma told a press conference.

“They are desperate for elections and only to get some votes, they are inflicting deep wounds on the soul of India,” he said.

Asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP’s statement was condemnable, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the leaders of the saffron party could afford to call the freedom movement a drama as they never fought for the country’s independence and made any sacrifices.

“Such statements reveal their true mindset that they use Gandhi’s name just for show and have no regard for him,” he said.

Demanding Hegde’s expulsion from the BJP, Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said it was time for the prime minister to prove whether his loyalty was towards Godse or Gandhi.

“The prime minister did not take action against Pragya Thakur, who continues to insult Mahatma Gandhi on a daily basis, and now, Anantkumar Hegde has joined the ‘hate bapu’ chorus. The prime minister’s love for Gandhi exists only in advertisements and on the ground, ‘hate Mahatma Gandhi’ seems to be the tool to mobilise his cadres.

“If the prime minister has even an ounce of respect for Gandhi, he should remove Thakur and Hegde from the party. It is time for the prime minister to prove whether his loyalty is towards Godse or Gandhi,” he said.

Modi should apologise for Hegde’s remarks, a sedition case should be slapped on the former Union minister and both Thakur and he should be removed from the BJP, Shergill demanded.

“If the prime minister does not take action as usual or takes patchwork action, then India will know that the PM stands with the killers of Gandhi,” he said.

Earlier, in a tweet, Shergill said, “Mahatma Gandhi does not need a certificate from cadre of Britishers ‘Chamchas & Spies’. High time BJP is renamed as ‘Nathuram Godse Party’.”

Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also took a dig at the BJP over Hegde’s remarks, wondering how could those who believed in “kattagraha” (the rule of pistols) accept “satyagraha”.

“This is Modi’s Bharat, where Bapu’s thoughts and the path he walked on are attacked everyday. Will Modi ji take action against Anant Hegde? Otherwise, it will be proven that the voice was of Hegde, but the idea was of ??Modi ji?,” he said in a tweet.

Earlier, reacting to Hegde’s remarks, Sharma said there could not be a greater insult to India’s national movement and those who sacrificed everything to give the country freedom.

“The prime minister, the BJP leadership as a whole has to apologise for these things,” he said.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted, saying, “Anant Kumar Hegde is perhaps reflecting the views of his masters. If he is not, his comments should invite the strictest possible action from his party.

“Those who sacrificed their lives and worked towards big change in the country were dumped in the dark corners of history, but those who fought in adjustment with the British became freedom fighters with certificates…. This is the tragedy of the country,” Hegde said in his remarks.
