New Delhi, April 13: In a bizarre moment, two BJP MLAs Bala Bhegade and Bhimrao Tapkir were seen having food when the party leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi was observing a day-long fast in protest against the complete washout of Parliament’s Budget Session.

According to the reports, Bhegade and Tapkir were caught on camera while having snacks at a meeting of legislators called by Guardian Minister Girish Bapat in Pune on Thursday.

The meeting was called to take a review of state government’s ‘Jalyukt Shivar’ scheme and Kharif season which was attended by the government officials as well as elected representatives including the MLAs.

Bapat had called a meeting of Pune district MLAs at the Council Hall to take a review of ongoing work on the Jalyukt Shivar project and distribution of seeds to farmers. The officers of the district administration were also present.

Later, when questioned about the incident, Tapkir said he and Bhegade “happened to eat by mistake”, the Indian Express reported.

“It is a routine to serve snacks during the meeting. So, when the snacks arrived, we happened to eat them while the discussions were on,” he stated

Tapkir stated the fast was not for BJP MLAs, but he held the fast in support of the cause by joining city MP Anil Shirole.

“I had met the MP in the morning and joined him for the fast. Then I had to attend the meeting, so I headed to the Council Hall… later, I was again supposed to join Shirole till the end of the fast”, he further added.

Justifying his stand, Tapki also said “If I had to cheat, then I would have eaten in a closed room. But the instance occurred in a room with party leaders and officers of the Pune collectorate”.

State results won’t affect 2019 Lok Sabha polls: Jaitley

He insisted that the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be fought around the performance of the Central government and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

New Delhi, Dec 11 : Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said that the results of the state Assembly elections where the BJP lost three major states were unlikely to have a bearing on the 2019 Lok Sabha polls which would be fought on “Central governments performance”.

He said that it was time for his party to “pause and introspect” but brushed aside the claims that the Congress won on account of Rahul Gandhi’s dynamic leadership.

“The issues in state elections are entirely different. We won all these three states (Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh) in December 2003 and we lost the general elections in 2004. So, there is no automatic transfer,” Jaitley said.

He insisted that the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be fought around the performance of the Central government and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The election issue will be whether we want a tried and tested leadership and government in place or we want an unstable, non-ideological coalition which is bound to splinter away sooner than later,” he said.

Stressing that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did quite well in all the three states despite a plethora of factors, such as anti-incumbency, going against it, Jaitley said his party could have done better.

“It was a tough fight but we had not speculated that the gap would be so large… Certainly we could have dome much better. I think it’s time for us to pause and introspect,” he said.

On Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, he said no election depends on an individual.

“An election is a combination of several factors. I don’t think anybody should mislead himself by thinking that the victory or defeat is due to one person,” he said.
