Lucknow, Nov 9 : There is a growing clamour to change the names of more cities. Bharatiya Janata Party lawmakers in Uttar Pradesh Jagan Prasad Garg demanded that Agra be renamed as “Agravan” or “Agrawal”and  Sangeet Som said the state government will soon be changing names of many other cities in the state after Allahabad was named Prayagraj and Faizabad, Ayodhya.

According to reports, the proposal is to rename the Agra airport after Jan Sangh founder Deen Dayal Upadhyay.

“Agra has no meaning. You check the name Agra anywhere, what relevance does it have? Earlier there used to be a lot of forests here. And people from the Agarwal community used to live here. So the name should be Agra-van or Agar-wal,”  Garg said at a press conference.

The firebrand  and controversial BJP leader Sangeet Som  leader said there has been a “long-pending demand of people to change the names of various districts” and revert to their original names.

“There will be changes (in the name of) of many other cities in the state,” he said while adding that Muzaffarnagar, which was named after Nawab Muzaffar Ali, will be changed to Laxminagar soon.

Som is a legislator from Sardhana in western UP. He said the Yogi Adityanath government was trying to correct the “distortion done by the Mughal rulers who plundered the country and harmed the Hindus”.

“We are only trying to restore the lost culture,” he said.

The Uttar Pradesh government had sent a request to the centre to rename the airports in Agra, Bareilly and Kanpur.
