BJP is expert in stealing and poaching MLAs: Congress

New Delhi, May 21: The Congress on Monday hit back at BJP President Amit Shah soon after the latter addressed his first press conference post-Karnataka verdict.

Levelling serious allegations against the saffron party, Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said the BJP spent around Rs 6,500 crore in the elections and had a provision of 4000 Cr for poaching MLAs.

“The BJP intimidated our legislators, withdrew their security, stopped them from flying. The BJP only did this to be able to abduct and poach our MLAs”, he added.

He further said that the BJP used all means to win Karnataka election but, they failed.

“The BJP has become a repeat offender when it comes to stealing mandate and Govt. Do their rules change with the states”, the Congress asked.

“Will the BJP give an account of its sources of money? On one hand, people’s money was snatched away by PM Modi, while on the other, BJP has all the money”.

Countering Amit Shah’s statement that the mandate in the state was against the Congress, Sharma said that the Karnataka mandate was for the Congress and the JD(S), adding two parties aligned to protect the social and secular fabric of the country.

He further added that he expected Shah to apologise for what the BJP did during the Assembly election and after polls. “But they are experts in stealing and poaching MLAs. On day of floor test too, 2 MLAs had to be protected by the police”.

In a scathing attack on Centre’s proposal of change in the allocation of services to successful candidates of the prestigious civil services examination, the Congress leader stated: ” After creating an environment of fear for Civil Servants, the Modi Govt is now interfering with the procedures of the Civil Services”.

“In the light of the Constitution, Modi Govt’s recent diktat compromises on the neutrality of the Civil Services and violates the constitutional principles”.

Taking a potshot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress said “No PM has ever distorted history and dragged the Indian Army in an election campaign with manufactured lies. This adds to PM Modi’s list of many firsts.”

The meeting at the Rajya Sabha Chairman’s house was believed to be over the ruckus created by MPs of certain opposition parties in the upper house earlier on Sunday where some members like TMC’s Derek O’Brien went aggressive and tore up documents. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narain Singh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

Meanwhile, further complicating the matter, the Congress party moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narain Singh for not entertaining opposition’s demand of a division of votes on the passage of the two agri Bills.

Congress leader Ahmed Patel while speaking to the media said, “Our demands for division were not met and the conduct of the Deputy Chairman was not according to democratic norms.” However, it is uncertain whether it came up during the high-level meet.

The opposition alleged that after the house’s time was over the Chair did not take consent of the house and demands of taking the Bills on Monday was denied as the chair went for a voice vote and demand for the division of votes was not allowed.
