New Delhi, July 12 : Defending his comments, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor asked Bharatiya Janata Party to clarify on record what the saffron party believes in “Hindu Rashtra concept” or a “secular republic”.
After the ruling BJP has reacted and demanded his apology over his comments on Wednesday, Tharoor said, “If BJP does not believe in Hindu Rashtra concept then they should say it on record that we do not believe in a Hindu Rashtra but in a secular republic.”
Tharoor expressed fears that if the BJP goes on to mark a repeat of their current strength in the Lok Sabha in 2019, then it will tear up the Indian constitution and create ‘Hindu Pakistan’.
“Why should I apologise when they themselves enshrine the ideals of a Hindu Rashtra,” Thiruvananthapuram MP said.
“If they (BJP) win a repeat in the Lok Sabha our democratic constitution as we understand it will not survive as they will have all the elements they need to tear apart the Constitution of India and write a new one,” Tharoor made the remarks while delivering a lecture on the ‘Threats Faced by Indian Democracy and Secularism’.
The Lok Sabha MP said the ruling party at the Centre wants a majoritarian rule in the country and will bring in a new Constitution and tear apart the existing one if it wins in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Listing out the things required by BJP to fulfill the dream of Savarkar, Thiruvananthapuram MP stated “As you know, they have two-thirds in Lok Sabha and they have more than half the states. They have 20 states and coalitions in two others. The only thing they don’t have is a majority in the Rajya Sabha but because they have so many state governments and because state assemblies elect the Rajya Sabha, you can be sure in 4-5 years, they will have a majority in Rajya Sabha as well.”
“That new one (constitution) will be the one which will enshrine principles of Hindu Rashtra, that’ll remove equality for minorities, that’ll create a Hindu Pakistan and that isn’t what Mahatama Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad and great heroes of freedom struggle fought for,” Tharoor claimed.
“In four to five years, they may get a majority in the Rajya Sabha. And then a Hindu Rastra will be made. A Hindu Pakistan will be made. The only thing that had stood in its way is a two-third majority in the Rajya Sabha,” Tharoor said while delivering a lecture on the ‘Threats Faced by Indian Democracy and Secularism’.
