Beeju Janta Dal leaders on Wednesday (20th December) staged a protest demanding tribunal to resolve the Mahanadi river water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside the Parliament.
The ruling party of Orrisa BJD has decided to demand a discussion on the issue in the Parliament today.
“We had moved adjournment motion yesterday and will move the motion tomorrow again demanding discussion on the issue. Already all-party committee has been formed in Odisha Legislative Assembly to meet the Prime Minister and demand constitution of a Tribunal,” BJD’s Kendrapara MP, Baijayant Panda said.
Although the Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR) had set up a Negotiation Committee on Mahanadi river for sorting out the disputes between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, it has not yielded any result. Chhattisgarh government has rejected Odisha government’s proposal to stop construction of projects on the upstream of Mahanadi before any discussion on the dispute.
