Born in Kundrodi, Gujrat, it was Kalyanji who first entered the Hindi film music scene in 1952 as an assistant to the great singer and composer Hemant Kumar. Kalyanji in fact played the famous Naagin been tune throughout the film! Kalyanji got his first major break in 1958 as composer for the film “Samraat Chandragupt”. At that time he composed with the name of Kalyanji Veerji Shah. He was joined next year by his younger brother Anandji and they started using the name Kalyanji-Anandji from then onwards.


Kalyanji–Anandji formed a bridge between Shankar–Jaikishan, whom they drew inspiration from in the beginning of their career, and Laxmikant–Pyarelal, who served as Kalyanji–Anandji’s assistants before striking out on their own.

The duo’s first major success was with Manmohan Desai’s “Chhaliya” in 1960.
