New Delhi, July, 18: Priyanka Chopra is celebrating her 36th birthday with alleged beau Nick Jonas in London today.
Don’s Jungli Billi has come a long way in the world of cinema. Neither is her dad a king nor is her mother a queen but she turned out to be a self-made princess, whose name oozes success, glamour and star power.
Priyanka Chopra was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand to physician parents Dr. Ashok and Madhu Chopra. Her father died after a long battle with cancer in 2013. She also has a younger brother Siddharth.
While in Bareilly, Prianka won the May Queen beauty pageant organised by the army. There was no looking back after that and she went on to finish runner up at the Femina Miss India contest in 2000. She captured international attention when she became Miss World in 2000, the crown fetched her one-way ticket to Bollywood.
One look at her Bollywood journey and you’ll know that Priyanka Chopra has always tread a path different from her Bollywood contemporaries.
She made her debut in The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, which also starred Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. Unfortunately, the film was a colossal flop.
However, her next film Andaaz, which released the same year got mixed reviews. She co-starred with Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta in the film.
Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), her second film with Akshay and her first with Salman Khan, was a huge success.
Although she was new in Bollywood, she took the risk of playing a villain in Aitraaz(2004). The film was a major blockbuster, which bagged Priyanka two Filmfare nominations, one for Best Supporting Actress and the other for Best Villain, the latter of which she won. Only two years into her career and she was already an award-winning, A-list actress. Clearly, she was here to stay.
2005’s Barsaat flopped miserably at the box office. However, Priyanka’s other films which released that year – Waqt: The Race Against Time, Bluffmaster, and Don (2006) were, in ascending order, sizeable hits.
Priyanka kicked off 2008 with Harman Baweja‘s debut film Love Story 2050, directed by his father. Rumour had it that Harman and Priyanka were a couple and the film’s promos, which promised a never-seen-before sci-fi spectacle, managed to snag a great opening.
Four years later, Priyanka grabbed the limelight and the national award for her role in Fashion.
Later with films like Dostana, Anjaana Anjaani, Don 2, Kaminey, 7 Khoon Maaf, , Gunday, she pretty much established the fact that she is here to stay.
2012’s Agneepath, in which she played Hrithik Roshan‘s love interest, broke Bollywood’s highest opening-day record.
Her final release of 2012 was Barfi!, a blockbuster. Priyanka received rave reviews for her performance as an autistic girl who falls in love with a hearing and speech impaired local Ranbir Kapoor.
In 2012, Priyanka launched her musical career with her first single In My City, featuring American rapper will.i.am. She followed it up with Exotic, this time collaborating with rapper Pitbull.
Priyanka released her third single I Can’t Make You Love Me in which she romanced Hollywood star Milo Ventimiglia.
Zanjeer and Krrish 3 were Priyanka’s 2013 films. Krrish 3 broke many records at the box office.
In 2014, Priyanka also received critical acclaim for her role as boxer MC Mary Kom in the biopic Mary Kom directed by Omung Kumar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film bagged the Best Popular Film at the 62nd National Film Awards.
2015 started on a good note for Priyanka, who featured in Zoya Akhtar’s ensemble film Dil Dhadakne Do and next seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani as Kashibai, the first wife of Peshwa Bajirao I (Ranveer Singh).
Prakash Jha’s Jai Gangaajal (2016), a sequel of sorts of Gangaajal, was also a hit. It is Priyanka’s last Hindi film as she is currently busy with Hollywood projects.
Chopra has received numerous awards, including a National Film Award and five Filmfare Awards. In 2016, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, and Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Priyanka started her television career with America crime drama series Quantico and won rave reviews for the portrayal of Alex Parrish. Priyanka has so far won two Peoples’ Choice Awards.
While many Indian actors have worked in Hollywood and faded away, Priyanka’s presence on the global entertainment scene is unmissable. Her first Hollywood film Baywatch released in the year 2017.
Ventilator, her first film as a producer, won three National Awards.
