New Delhi, July 7: Former India captain and one of India’s finest cricketers MS Dhoni turns 37 on Saturday. 

Captain Cool, as he is still fondly called, celebrated his birthday with wife Sakshi, daughter Ziva, Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma and all the members of the Indian team in his hotel room after the second T20 international against England in Cardiff, yesterday night.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on July 7, 1981, in the eastern city of Ranchi and was his school goalkeeper before he took to cricket. A rare cricketing success for someone not coming from a major hub.

Dhoni is a right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper.

Hailing from Ranchi, Dhoni initially had an interest in Badminton and Football, until his teacher asked him to join the school cricket team. After making his international debut in 2004, the right-handed batsman has led India for almost decade.

Dhoni is the only captain to win all three ICC trophies — 50-over World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and World T20 — while also taking India to the top of the ICC Test rankings. After winning all the major ICC tournaments, Dhoni handed the role of captaincy to Virat Kohli.

Dhoni holds numerous captaincy records such as most wins by an Indian captain in Tests and ODIs, and most back-to-back wins by an Indian captain in ODIs. He took over the ODI captaincy from Rahul Dravid in 2007 and led the team to its first-ever bilateral ODI series wins in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the CB Series of 2007–08, the 2010 Asia Cup, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

In the final of the 2011 World Cup, Dhoni scored 91 not out off 79 balls handing India the victory for which he was awarded the Man of the Match. In June 2013, when India defeated England in the final of the Champions Trophy in England, Dhoni became the first captain to win all three ICC limited-overs trophies (World Cup, Champions Trophy and the World Twenty20).

In the Indian Premier League, Dhoni is the most successful skipper. With Chennai Super Kings, he had won three IPL trophy while leading the team into seven finals.

Dhoni married Sakshi Singh Rawat, his schoolmate in DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali; on 4 July 2010.

Dhoni became father on 6 February 2015 to a baby girl named Ziva.

Dhoni had long hair which he has now shortened; he cut it because he wanted to look like his favourite film star John Abraham. For his look, he was admired by none other than former Pakistan President Parvez Musharraf !!

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the highest individual income tax-payer in Jharkhand state and one of the highest in India. Dhoni paid an income tax worth Rs 20 crore in 2013-14 to emerge as the highest tax payer in individual category in Bihar and Jharkhand region for the sixth consecutive year. Currently, Dhoni has 20 endorsements, only Shahrukh Khan has more 21.

MSD loves fast bikes. He has 23 of them, and counting! Dhoni’s interest in bikes was often discussed in media.He co-parternered Akkineni Nagarjuna in buying a Supersport World Championship team Mahi Racing Team India.

1. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India topped the Test cricket rankings for the first time, in 2009

2. Dhoni is the first Indian wicket-keeper to complete 4,000 Test runs

3. He holds the record of maximum dismissals by an Indian wicketkeeper in an innings.

4. In 2017, Dhoni became first Indian and fifth overall to hit 200 sixes in ODIs.

5. Holds the record for playing the most number of matches in ODI history as a captain who has also served as a wicketkeeper

6. The first player to score 1000 runs in T20Is without even scoring a career half-century and also holds the record for scoring the most career runs in T20I history before first fifty

7. He has played the most number of international matches as captain and also hit the most international sixes as captain.

8. He broke the record of Adam Gilchrist for the highest score made by a wicket keeper by scoring 183 runs.

9. MS Dhoni is the only captain to win all ICC tournament cups.

10. Dhoni was conferred with the honorary rank of Lt Colonel by the Indian Territorial Army in November 2011. Dhoni has, time and again, iterated that he would like to play some role in the Army in the future.



11. Dhoni received Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India’s highest honor given for achievement in sports, 2007–08.
