Political stars gather for Lalu’s son’s wedding

Patna, May 12 (IANS) Opposition leaders gathered here on Saturday to attend the wedding of RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s son Tej Pratap Yadav, the festivities made brighter by the presence of the now jailed former Bihar Chief Minister.

Lalu Prasad arrived here on Thursday from Ranchi on parole for three days to attend the elder son’s marriage. But on Friday, the Ranchi High Court granted him six weeks bail.

More than 30,000 people were set to attend the event, and many had poured in from all across Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, RJD state President Ram Chander Purve said.

According to RJD leader Bhola Yadav, NCP leader Praful Patel, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, dissident BJP MPs Shatrughan Sinha and Kirti Azad and rebel Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav had reached the city.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and some notable BJP leaders from Bihar were also expected to arrive, Bhola Yadav said.

Bihar’s popular ‘litti-chokha’, Amritsari kulcha, imarti, gulab jamun, karhai paneer and kulfi besides continental dishes will be served to the guests.

“There will be 200 items in the lavish dinner,” a staffer at Lalu Prasad’s residence said.

The marriage venue has been decorated with flowers from Thailand.

The venue is a sprawling veterinary college ground, spread over 9,000 square metres, RJD leader Shakti Yadav said.

All of Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi’s seven daughters are married. The younger son, Tejashwi Yadav, a former Deputy Chief Minister, is also single yet.

“Laluji is enjoying every moment with his family,” an insider said.

Lalu Prasad was jailed in December after conviction in the fodder scam.

Child dies of ‘extreme heat’ in Brahmaputra Express

Lucknow, May 25: A six-month-old child died due to extreme heat wave conditions on Friday in an overcrowded train in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The child was travelling with her parents in a sleeper coach of the Brahmaputra Express.

The victim’s family alleged that the coach was packed with passengers and their daughter was suffocated in the extreme heat.

The train was going from Dibrugarh in Assam to Delhi. The distraught family alleged that the train stopped in Allahabad outer for more than two hours, leading to further deterioration of the girl’s condition.

Co-passengers also alleged that despite requests for medical aid, no one, including the train ticket collector, paid heed to their pleas.

When the train reached Allahabad, the passengers created a ruckus, after which the railway officials intervened.

The family belongs to Mughalsarai district in Uttar Pradesh.

Hot day, Heatwave conditions in Delhi

New Delhi, May 25: It was clear sky on Friday here in the national capital with the minimum temperature recorded at 23.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average, said the Met as it forecast heatwave conditions at some areas in the city.

“It will be a clear sky with heat wave condition likely to occur in a few areas,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said. According to the Skymet, the day was likely to be hot with few clouds.

The humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 37 per cent. The maximum temperature will hover around 44 degrees Celsius.

On Thursday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 43 degree Celsius, three notches above the season’s average while the minimum temperature was 26.5 degrees Celsius, the season’s average.

Besides Delhi NCR, the IMD had also stated that heat wave condition will prevail in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan too until Monday.

The central and northern India continue to remain under the grip of a heat wave.

Virendra appointed new DG of West Bengal police

Ajay Kumar Nand, who was IGP Counter Insurgency Force (CIF), will be the Director, security, replacing SN Gupta, it said.

Kolkata, May 25 : The West Bengal government has appointed Virendra as the new director-general of police, replacing current DGP Surajit Kar Purkayastha, who would be retiring on May 31, a notification issued late last night said.

Virendra was posted as the DG (security).

Ajay Kumar Nand, who was IGP Counter Insurgency Force (CIF), will be the Director, security, replacing SN Gupta, it said.

Gupta was made the new ADG CIF with additional charges of ADG, establishment, the notification said.

According to a senior official at the secretariat, a new post — advisor (security) — has been created to accommodate Purkayastha.

“Kar Purkayastha is highly experienced and the chief minister prefers him and wants to utilise him in security-related issues. He will likely be advising to the chief minister on security-related issues,” he said.

Incidentally, Purkayastha was the first DGP in the state who was given an extension after his official retirement in 2016.
