Himachal Snow Fall: 650 evacuated, 1,000 still stranded in hills

Shimla, Sep 26: Over 650 people, including five foreigners and IIT Roorkee students, have been evacuated in the past two days and over 1,000 are still stranded in snow-hit Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, officials said on Wednesday.

Three stranded persons, including a pregnant woman from Nepal, have lost their lives in the past two days.

On Wednesday, as the weather cleared, the government and the Indian Air Force (IAF) engaged in evacuation work to airlift tourists stranded for the past four days.

“IAF choppers and the state government are on the job to airlift the stranded. Most have been brought to Manali and Kullu towns,” Kullu Deputy Commissioner Yunus Khan, who is supervising the relief and rescue operation, told IANS over telephone.

The IAF has deployed three helicopters while the state is using the Chief Minister’s official chopper.

Nine persons, hailing from West Bengal, were airlifted from Stingri and five from the snow-marooned Baralacha Pass (16,020 ft). Five tourists from Norway and Denmark were also rescued.

Meanwhile, two Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and one Medium Lift Helicopters (MLH) deployed in Bhuntar. The ALH rescued 7 people from Patsio yesterday, 5 from Bara-Lacha Pass and 14 people from Stingri on Wednesday. It dropped 1000 food packets for those stranded in Rohtang.

The BRO has also rescued 35 IIT Roorkee students who went missing in Lahaul Spiti while returning after trekking from Hampta trekking pass in Kullu. They are at Mountaineering Institute in Manali.

Most people who got struck at the Baralacha Pass were reportedly travelling to Manali from Leh in Jammu and Kashmir.

Early snowfall in the higher reaches, cloud burst and heavy rains devastated large parts of the state from September 22 to 24. Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti were the worst affected.

According to the Broader Roads Organisation (BRO), the heavy snowfall on the Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft) has cut off the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys affecting a large number of tourists.

The BRO, a wing of the Defence Ministry, has been clearing the snow from various roads on a war footing. Some stretches had more than eight feet of snow.

By Tuesday evening, 457 persons have been rescued from the Lahual Valley to Manali through the Rohtang tunnel.

Hyderabad: Man stabbed to death in broad daylight

Death

Hyderabad, Sep 26: A man was hacked to death in broad daylight on a busy road in Hyderabad on Wednesday even as policemen present nearby allegedly stood as mute spectators.

Two men chased a man and hacked him to death with an axe on Attapur road under PVNR Expressway as people watched in horror.

One of the attackers repeatedly dealt blows with the axe till he was certain that the victim lost his life.

Police identified the slain man as Ramesh Goud (38), the main accused in the murder of his friend Mahesh Goud in a sexual jealousy case last year.

Mahesh Goud’s father Krishna Goud and uncle Laxman Goud avenged his murder by killing Ramesh, when he was returning home after appearing in a court in the murder case.

Witnesses said a couple of policemen present near the scene of the crime did nothing to stop the killers. Police officials, however, claimed that they had gone to get their batons.

In one video which went viral on social media, a police patrol vehicle was also seen passing by. The officials, however, clarified that the vehicle went a few yards ahead and stopped by the roadside.

Some passersby tried to stop the attackers but in vain. The assailants were not afraid even after seeing the policemen and the patrol vehicle.

The killer in the video is seen buttoning his shirt after striking a series of blows with the axe and raising his hand as if to signal “victory”.

The killers were later arrested by the police.

Wednesday’s killing is another shocking twist in the case which appeared to be from a film. Ramesh, with the help of three men, had killed Mahesh in a brutal fashion in December last year because the latter was getting close to his paramour.

According to police, Ramesh had extramarital relations with a woman but his friend Mahesh had also started developing friendship with her. As Mahesh did not mend his ways despite warnings, Ramesh hatched a plot to eliminate him.

Ramesh along with three others took Mahesh on a trip to a temple near the city. When Mahesh was fully drunk, Ramesh slit his throat with a knife in the moving car. They later burnt the body near the temple.

The crime came to light when the workers at a car service centre found blood stains in the car and alerted the police.
