New Delhi, Sep 4 : Ahead of the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, the Congress on Wednesday appointed former Union Minister Kumari Selja as the state party chief and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the Congress Legislature Party leader and Chairman of the Election Committee.

The announcements were made by former Union Minister and Haryana Congress in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad and party General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal.

Addressing the media, Azad said: “Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has approved the appointment of Kumari Selja as Haryana Congress chief.”

“Hooda has been made the CLP leader and Leader of Opposition and also the Chairman of the Election Committee,” he added.

The appointments end months of speculation over the issue of new state Congress chief amid reports of difference between former Haryana state unit chief Ashok Tanwar and Hooda.

The elections in the state are scheduled later this year.

Azad admitted that there was a delay in the appointment of the state chief but “better late than never”.

To a question over Hooda using pressure tactics to gain control in the party, Azad said: “Whatever done in the past is past. This is the future and the new team will ensure to strengthen the Congress in elections.”

Attacking Opposition RJD, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday appealed to people not to “get misled” by those who “ignored” women and backward classes during their rule”.

Addressing an election rally at Parbatta here, he said, “They are talking today, but how was the condition of women earlier? They were ignored, nobody paid attention to their issues.”

Attacking his bete noire and jailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad, without naming him, Nitish said, “When he was sent to jail, he installed his wife (Rabri Devi) on the chair, but did nothing for the welfare of the women otherwise.”

Lalu Prasad, who became chief minister of Bihar in 1990, had anointed his wife on the CM chair after he was sent to jail in 1997 over multicrore-rupee fodder scam cases.

Nitish said when he got the opportunity to work, he gave reservation to women in panchayats and urban local bodies, besides providing quotas to SC, ST and backward classes.

“If Bihar has progressed today, the biggest reason is womens participation. Promoting women is our commitment,” the JD(U) chief said.

Talking about economic empowerment of women, he said his government started the Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project (BRLP), locally known as JEEViKA, by taking loan from the World Bank and the initiative has expanded today.

Trying to connect to his women voters constituency, he mentioned prohibition and asked them to cast their votes first and cook later on polling day and also encourage others in their family to vote.

Nitish declared Bihar a dry state in April 2016. On several occasions he had said he took the step on the demand of the women.

He said his government has ensured just development by taking along the SC, the ST, Backward Classes, Extremely Backward Classes and Mahadalits “whom nobody cared about earlier”.

He said, “Earlier even cities did not have electricity, but now we have ended the lantern era and every household gets power now.”

Lantern is the poll symbol of the RJD.

“Everybody knows who says what and indulges is what kind of misdeeds. They (the Opposition) neither have the experience to work nor do they want to work. They just indulge in useless talks,” he alleged.

Speaking about the cooperation between the state and the Centre, he said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given several projects for the development of Bihar. If you give us another chance to work, we will take Bihar forward and make it a developed state.”

He also slammed the RJD over its record on law and order, education, health, jobs and other development parameters.

He said if voted to power, he will take irrigation water to every field and provide solar street light in every village.

The constituency goes to poll on November 3 in the second phase.

Kumar, who heads the JD(U), also addressed public meetings in Sheohar and Runi Saidpur in Sitamarhi district and listed achieveents of his past governments.

Former Unnao MP Annu Tandon Resigns From Congress

In a statement released to the media, Annu Tandon said that she has sent her resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi and requested her to accept it immediately.

Annu Tandon

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Congress removed senior leader Annu Tandon from the party on Thursday shortly after she announced her resignation citing “misalignment with the state-level leadership”.

Training her gun on the state leaders, Ms Tandon said she has sent her resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi.

When asked about it, UP Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu said she “has been expelled from the party for six years on charges of anti-party activities”.

She had “not been taking interest in party programmes for a long time” and the disciplinary committee of the party looked into these charges, Mr Lallu added.

The development comes days ahead of the November 3 by-election in Bangarmau Assembly seat under Unnao, once represented by Tandon in Lok Sabha.

In a statement released to the media in the morning, Ms Tandon said that she has requested Sonia Gandhi to accept her resignation immediately.

While stating that she had continuously received warmth and guidance of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi during her 15-year association with the party, Ms Tandon said there is a “misalignment between the state-level leadership” and she did not see their support coming her way since the past several months.

“The state leadership of the party has focused only on social media management and self branding and is oblivious to the deep divisions in the party and the voters it has thus caused,” Ms Tandon said.

She said canards were being spread about her and her associates by the local, irrelevant, and chosen few.

Terming it both “painful and disgusting”, she said there was no attempt by the party leadership to stem this.

Ms Tandon said she had raised the matter with in-charge of UP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who had assured that the Congress president is fully apprised of the situation. However, the matter had remained unresolved.

“My ideology and principles have been aligned with the senior leadership of the party and my resignation does not change this,” she said, adding she would be consulting her workers on the future path.
