BHU violence : Doctors at Sir Sunderlal Hospital beaten up, police booth, bikes set ablaze

Varanasi, Sep 25 : Heavy police has been deployed  at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) based Sir Sunderlal Hospital in Varanasi as BHU witnessed another round of violence late on Monday night when a clash broke out between junior doctors of BHU’s Sir Sunderlal hospital and the kin of a patient over the non-availability of a bed.

This prompted the kin to resort to violent protests in which the students allegedly destroyed a police booth near Lakshman Das guest house, State Bank of India ATM within the BHU premises and two motorbikes. They also burnt university property at Birla, Ruiya and Dhanvantri hostels.

The clash broke out  when a  Chandoli-resident had to come to the university hospital for a surgery and asked the doctors to provide a bed to a patient in the male surgery ward, but after the on-call doctor told him that the bed was not available, the patients’ friends (students) started creating ruckus. Soon the debate broke into violence.

At least six students were injured in the clashes. As per the report, BHU students also held demonstration near the Birla Chowk.

Police said,”The situation is under control. We will collect CCTV footage to identify the culprits. We have detained one person.”A thick security cover has been deployed in the university. Local Dm and SSP have taken out flag march in the affected area.
